The icing on the cake which proves that The Legend of Korra was a mere love letter to fans as it not only featured a crack ship coming true, but at the same time a same-sex crack ship to boot. These were heavily popular during the days of Avatar the Last Airbender and it's nice to see that Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko at least wanted to show their appreciation for the fandom by having one be the victory in the new shipping war.

haha, i wouldn't really describe korrasami as a crack ship, but i'm also extremely happy that korrasami was a thing. first non-straight person to star in a western cartoon! i hope that, when they make the next avatar series, they continue making it with nice themes like the legend of korra had.

if you read what the writers of the show had to say about it, they actually really felt like korra was just leaning in this direction. they have some really nice things to say about representation, actually. it's worth the read!
but yes, korrasami becoming canon was exciting for me. apparently Kaya is also supposed to be LGBTQ, but we don't know specifically what her deal is. the writers just mentioned that when inquired about other characters like korra!
